Ever hear about static electricity? It involves things called positive and negative ions working in ways that produce funky results. For a simple demonstration that doesn't need a paper to explain the intricacies of static, rub a plastic ruler for a few minutes on your clothes and hold them up on some small scraps of paper. The paper will magically stick to the paper. Gasp in wonder and amazement!

Although you may not have the same reaction if you're going out of the house with that same effect pulling your hair. At this point, you would definitely want to know how to get rid of static electricity if ever it will plague your beloved hair. Don't fret as there is help for you, ionic flat irons and a few tips to complete it.

Here are a few, simple tips to get rid of that static build-up in your hair:

o Brushing your hair - brushing your hair after a bath or a shower means that two objects will come into contact and rub together: your hair and your brush. This is especially so for nylon brushes. Make sure that before brushing, gently pat dry your hair with a static sheet designed to absorb those ions. Or you could spend some money on those reputedly static-free brushes and save yourself the hassle.

o Check your clothes - like how brushing your hair produces static electricity, the same goes when your hair rubs against your clothing. Wool is one particularly troubling material that causes significant levels of static buildup on your hair. Try not to wear wool when you don't want your hairdo getting obliterated by the swipe of a hat, a scarf, or a shirt. If you absolutely must wear wool or other static-prone clothing items then...

o Moisturize your hair - dry, humid hair makes it easier for static to build up in your hair. Detanglers spray or leave-on conditioner helps wonders in preventing static electricity from making your hair run amok. Of course, you don't want the other extreme to happen: over-moisturizing your hair. That's as bad as static electricity, if not worse. Strike a balance: enough moisture to keep your hair in place, and not enough moisture to turn your hair into a damp mop.

o Check your hair-care products - some shampoos and other hair-care products strip your hair of its natural oils. Not only do these oils keep your hairs healthy and alive, but they also help prevent static from building up.

o Ionized hair-care tools - There's a whole host of new-fangled stuff out there that prevents static from building up in your hair. Ionic flat irons and dryers manipulate ions in such a way that they claim to make your hair "healthier" and "static" free. There are two ways to verify if they'll work for you: get a PhD in a field related to electricity, study the devices, and then publish a dissertation proving or disproving their claim. Or you could try them out on your hair and then make a decision for yourself. Of course, be careful with them. No matter how advanced an ionic flat iron is, if you don't know how to use them, you're still going to end up messing up your hair.

And there you have it: static sheets, moisturizers, and ionic flat irons and dryers. Armed with this knowledge on how to save your hair from the horrors of static electricity should help you control the electricity that fuels your frazzled forest.

Good luck taming the beast!
